Key takeaways
AI visibility measures a brand’s place in the answers of AI engines. Is it named? Are its pages cited, and against which competitors? No tool measures it on its own. You combine five sources: the Search Console AI report, Bing’s AI Performance report, a fixed prompt panel, server logs and referral traffic.
- Since August 31, 2026, Search Console shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page everywhere, but not clicks.
- Bing Webmaster Tools is the only publisher tool that shows citations and grounding queries (Copilot and Bing).
- Elev8 Lab benchmark: a change of less than 5 points from one month to the next should be read as measurement noise.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility refers to the place of a brand or a website in the answers generated by AI engines. This covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. It covers two distinct things: the brand being named and the page being cited. You measure them separately, then compare them with competitors.
The work that aims to improve it has a name: GEO, presented in our GEO guide. This page deals only with measurement.
| Object | Question | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentioned | Does the engine name the company? | Mention rate on a prompt panel |
| Page cited | Does a URL from the site appear as a source? | Citation rate, cited pages, AI impressions |
| AI share of voice | What position against competitors? | Brand’s share among the brands cited |
Engines do not behave the same way. Semrush analyzed 126 million prompts between January and April 2026: ChatGPT cites about 15 sources per answer, Gemini about 3. On Gemini, the overlap between brands mentioned and domains cited can fall to 30% (Semrush, June 26, 2026). A single AI visibility score, across all engines, therefore hides what matters most.
What does the Search Console AI report measure?
In June 2026, Google announced performance reports dedicated to generative AI in Search Console (Google Search Central Blog). The rollout happened in waves and has covered all sites since August 31, 2026 (Search Engine Journal, August 31, 2026).
| What the report shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|
| Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode (a separate report covers Discover) | Clicks |
| Breakdown by page, country and date; by device for search | Queries, CTR, position |
Two practical limits. A site needs to accumulate enough AI impressions to see the report. And the history follows the usual Search Console rules: archive an export every month.
In France, AI Overviews and AI Mode have been active since the rollout of July 22, 2026: always compare the before and after of this date. How the tool works in general is detailed in our Google Search Console guide.
What does Bing Webmaster Tools show about citations?
The AI Performance report has been in public preview since February 10, 2026 (Bing Webmaster Blog, February 10, 2026). It shows the total number of citations, the average number of pages cited per day and activity by URL. It also gives the grounding queries, that is, the phrasings the AI uses to look for content. It covers Microsoft Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and some partner integrations.
On June 16, 2026, Bing added four features in preview (Bing Search Blog, June 16, 2026). They classify grounding queries by intent and group them by topic. They also calculate a citation share and allow comparison. The report shows neither clicks, nor position, nor the page’s role in the answer.
Remember
It is the only publisher report that exposes citations. Whatever Copilot’s audience in your sector, turn it on. It shows which pages an AI engine considers useful, and for which phrasings.
How do you measure your AI visibility on ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity?
These engines provide no dashboard to publishers. Measurement relies on a prompt panel, recorded on fixed dates, manually or with a tracking tool.
- Build the panel: 50 to 100 prompts for a first baseline (Elev8 Lab benchmark). Cover five types: discovery, comparison, recommendation, local, brand reputation.
- Link each prompt to a real query: Search Console questions, questions asked to customer support, related searches.
- Freeze the panel: any addition is dated and tracked separately, otherwise the series are no longer comparable.
- Record each prompt several times: the same question asked twice does not give the same answer.
- Note the settings: date, time, country, language, engine, model version if displayed.
Tracking tools automate these measurements: the AI modules of Semrush and Ahrefs, Meteoria, Qwairy, Peec AI, Otterly, Profound, among others. Their sampling methods are not published, and two tools give different shares of voice on the same scope. Never compare measurements from different tools. Keep a manual control check on a dozen priority prompts.
Which metrics should you track every month?
| Metric | Source | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mention rate | Prompt panel | Presence of the brand in the answers |
| URL citation rate | Prompt panel | Site pages used as sources |
| AI share of voice | Prompt panel | Position against named competitors |
| AI impressions | Search Console | Exposure in AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Citations and grounding queries | Bing Webmaster Tools | Pages Copilot considers useful |
| AI crawler visits | Server logs | Actual crawler access to the pages |
| AI sessions and conversions | Analytics tool | Business value of traffic coming from AIs |
For traffic, create a segment that groups the referrers chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. It only captures clicks, which are a minority compared with exposures. The setup is described in our web analytics pillar. On the crawler side, visits can be read in the logs (see our GPTBot and AI crawlers page).
How do you interpret the results without getting it wrong?
AI visibility is a noisy measurement. Three internal benchmarks, drawn from our method and not from a published study, prevent hasty conclusions.
| Monthly change in share of voice | Reading |
|---|---|
| Less than 5 points | Probably measurement noise: do not report it as a trend |
| 5 to 15 points | Signal to examine: content, competitor, panel |
| More than 15 points | Break: first check for a model change |
Also connect visibility to the effect on clicks. On informational queries, Seer Interactive measures an organic click-through rate of 2.07% for a brand cited in the AI Overview. It drops to 0.94% when the brand is not cited and rises to 3.35% with no AI Overview (2025 average, Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026). Seer specifies that the 0.94% figure is pulled down by a single account; without it, it is close to 1.61%. Being visible in AI limits the loss of clicks, without making up for it: track both.
Warning
Does traffic coming from AIs convert better? The published studies contradict each other and rarely publish their method. Measure on your own data and always show the volume of sessions: a rate calculated on a few dozen visits says nothing.
To act on the measurement results next, see our pages on Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT SEO. Allow at least six months of tracking, with a stable panel, before drawing conclusions (Elev8 Lab benchmark).
Frequently asked questions
How can you measure your AI visibility for free?
Turn on the Search Console generative AI report and the Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report. Create an AI traffic segment in your analytics tool. Then manually record a dozen key prompts every month on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Does Search Console show clicks coming from AI Overviews?
No. As of September 24, 2026, the generative AI report shows impressions by page, country, date and device, with no clicks, queries or position. Clicks remain aggregated in the classic performance report.
What is an AI visibility score?
It is a metric calculated by a tracking tool. In general, it measures how often a brand is mentioned on a prompt panel, compared with its competitors. Each tool has its own formula. A score is only comparable with itself, within the same tool.
How often should you measure your AI visibility?
A monthly measurement on a fixed date is enough for steering, complemented by a qualitative manual check. Answers vary from one session to another: run each prompt several times and only draw conclusions from repeated measurements.
