SEO content: strategy, formats and optimization

Publishing more is not enough to rank. Successful SEO content is decided before writing: which topic has real demand, which intent to target, which format to adopt, what place to give the page within the site. This page covers SEO content from a strategy angle: the types of content to produce depending on search intent, the eight steps of an SEO content strategy, semantic optimization, the signals that call for updating, merging or deleting a page, Google’s position on generative AI and the metrics to track. The writing itself is detailed in the SEO writing guide.

Key takeaways

SEO content is a page designed to answer a real search better than the pages that already rank. Its success is decided before writing. You need to choose topics that have demand, assign one intent to each page and organize the pages in relation to each other. Then you need to update, merge or delete what no longer serves a purpose.

  • One search intent, one page: that is the rule that prevents cannibalization.
  • The format follows the intent: definition, guide, comparison, service page or product page.
  • Google accepts AI in production, not pages mass-produced with no added value.

What is SEO content?

SEO content is a text, a page or a media item published to be found for a specific query. It meets a real need of users. Its format allows Google and answer engines to crawl it, understand it and cite it. It is the second pillar of search engine optimization, after technical work.

Google does not talk about “SEO content” but about “helpful, reliable, people-first” content. Its page Creating helpful content offers a self-assessment grid. Does the content provide original information? Substantial analysis? Added value compared with other results? A text written first for a search engine fails this test.

Not to be confused

SEO content and SEO writing do not mean the same thing. SEO content is a matter of strategy: which topics, which formats, which organization. SEO writing is a matter of execution: outline, tags, style. It is covered in the SEO writing guide.

What types of SEO content should you produce?

The right format can be read in the SERP. If the top ten results are comparisons, a definition article stands little chance. The guide to search intent details how to read it. The following table links common intents to the formats that meet them.

IntentExample querySuitable format

A balanced site combines these formats. Service pages capture commercial demand; guides and definitions build visible expertise and feed internal links to those pages.

How do you build an SEO content strategy?

An SEO content strategy decides what to publish, in what order and why. It fits in eight steps.

  1. Set the goal: awareness, leads, sales. Each piece of content must serve one of them, otherwise it has no reason to exist.
  2. Describe the readers: their questions, their level, their vocabulary. Sales and support teams are the best source.
  3. Measure demand: volumes, intents, competition. Keyword research turns a list of ideas into priorities.
  4. Assign one page per intent: a two-column spreadsheet, query and target URL. Two pages on the same intent compete with each other.
  5. Take stock of what exists: what ranks, what stagnates, what gets no impressions.
  6. Organize into topic areas: one pillar page per theme, articles that go into detail, links between them. See site structure and internal linking.
  7. Prioritize: traffic potential, value for the business, production effort, ability to bring first-hand experience.
  8. Brief, publish, measure: one brief per piece of content, a planned review date, a check after one month and then after three months.

Tip

Keep a content register: URL, target query, publication date, update date, status. It is the simplest tool against cannibalization and forgotten pages.

What is semantic optimization?

Semantic optimization covers a topic with the vocabulary, entities and sub-questions that readers and search engines associate with it. It goes beyond repeating the keyword. A page on “crawl budget” that mentions neither Googlebot, nor logs, nor Search Console looks incomplete.

  • Lexical field: synonyms, variants, technical terms of the field.
  • Entities: brands, tools, organizations, dates, places, cited precisely.
  • Sub-questions: questions from the SERP, customer support and forums, each handled in a section that makes sense on its own.

This last point also matters for AI search engines. For its AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google describes a “query fan-out” technique (Google, AI features, December 10, 2025). The engine runs several searches on subtopics to build its answer. A page that answers the sub-questions multiplies its entry points.

Keyword density is not documented by Google. The 1% benchmarks in circulation are agency safeguards against over-optimization. To assess the coverage of an entire site, see the semantic audit.

Should you update, merge or delete your content?

Published content is never finished. Figures age, the SERP changes format, a competitor publishes something better. An update always starts from a measured signal, never from a whim.

When merging, keep the URL that has seniority, incoming links and the best-aligned intent, then redirect the other one. Other causes of duplicates are covered in the guide to duplicate content. Google also details its method to analyze a traffic drop before acting.

Can you produce SEO content with AI?

Yes, under conditions. Google’s page on AI-generated content was revised on December 10, 2025. It accepts AI for research and structuring, if the result is original, accurate and useful. However, generating many pages with no added value violates the spam policies. That is scaled content abuse, whatever the tool.

Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines point the same way. The lowest rating applies to main content that is copied, paraphrased or automatically generated with little effort and originality.

What AI does not replace: lived experience, tests, real cases, source checking. These are precisely the signals of the E-E-A-T framework.

How do you measure the performance of SEO content?

Search Console provides four metrics per page and per query: impressions, clicks, click-through rate, average position. Position is an average weighted by impressions, not an observed position. The Google Search Console guide explains how to read them.

  • After one month: is the page indexed, and for which queries does it appear?
  • After three months: are impressions growing on the target query? Is the click-through rate consistent with the position?
  • Ongoing: non-branded organic traffic, attributed conversions, links and citations earned.

Business value shows up in the analytics tool, by comparing organic sessions and conversions. A piece of content can generate little traffic and many leads. For the place of SEO in a broader editorial strategy, see the content marketing guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is SEO content writing?

It is writing a page optimized for a query: an outline based on the intent, a title tag, a heading structure, direct answers, sources. It comes after the strategy, which has chosen the topic and the format. Our SEO writing guide details the method.

How long should SEO content be?

Google sets no length. The right length answers the intent completely. A definition fits in a few paragraphs, a reference guide needs much more. Look at the length of the pages that already rank, then make yours more useful, not longer.

How many pieces of SEO content should you publish per month?

There is no documented optimal pace. A few useful, up-to-date pieces are better than dozens of thin pages. The pace depends on your ability to produce real added value and to update existing content.

What are the types of SEO content?

The main ones are the definition or glossary entry, the reference guide, the tutorial, the comparison, the service page, the product page and the news article. Each meets a different intent, which the SERP helps identify.
