Meta description: what is it for?

The meta description sums up your page in one or two sentences. Google can show it under the title of your results, but most of the time it builds the snippet from the content: a 2020 Ahrefs study found it rewrote the description in nearly two cases out of three. It does not affect rankings, only clicks. This guide explains when it is actually displayed, the length to aim for, how to write it, how to prioritise on a large site and how to check the snippet that is really shown.

Key points

The meta description is a short summary of the page, placed in a <meta name="description"> tag. Google can show it under the title in search results, but it builds the snippet mostly from the page content. It has no influence on rankings: it serves the click-through rate, when Google uses it.

  • Google rewrote the description in 62.78% of the cases studied by Ahrefs (192,656 pages, October 2020).
  • No official limit: aim for 140 to 160 characters, with the key message in the first 120.
  • Prioritise pages that get traffic and pages whose automatic snippet is poor.

What is a meta description?

The meta description is an HTML metadata element that summarises the content of a page in one or two sentences. It sits in the <head> section, with the name="description" attribute described in the MDN documentation.

<head>
  <title>Meta description: role, length and examples | Elev8 Lab</title>
<meta name="description" content="What Google does with the meta description, the length to aim for and a method to write it.">
</head>

Visitors do not see it on the page. When Google keeps it, it appears in the grey snippet under the result title. Social networks tend to use the og:description tag when it exists. On WordPress, a plugin such as Yoast SEO provides a dedicated field for each page, with no code to touch.

Google lists it among the meta tags it supports. The meta keywords tag, on the other hand, is no longer used by Google Search, as its starter guide points out.

Does the meta description affect SEO?

Not rankings. Google does not list it among its ranking signals. Its documentation presents it as a help for displaying the snippet. Its possible effect is on the click-through rate. A precise summary makes people want to choose your result over another.

It still has to be displayed. According to the Control your snippets documentation (April 20, 2026), snippets are created mainly from the page content. Google uses the tag when it describes the page more accurately than the text it could extract.

62.78%

Ahrefs studied 192,656 pages ranking for 20,000 keywords. Google showed a snippet different from the written description in 62.78% of cases. The rate rises to 65.62% for long-tail queries.

So the snippet depends on the query. For a precise search, Google often prefers the passage of the page that answers it. For a query close to the main topic, your description has a better chance of appearing.

Warning

The Ahrefs study dates from 2020. No more recent public measurement of the same scale had been found as of September 24, 2026: the current rate may differ.

How long should a meta description be?

Google sets no limit: the tag can be any length. The snippet, however, is truncated “as needed, typically to fit the device width”.

The length to aim for is therefore a writing convention. At Elev8 Lab, we use:

BenchmarkValueWhy
Target range140 to 160 charactersEnough for a full sentence and a benefit
Maximum165 charactersBeyond that, the risk of truncation increases
Useful zoneThe first 120 charactersThe snippet is cut according to screen width, which is narrower on mobile
Practical minimumAbout 70 charactersBelow that, the summary says almost nothing
Elev8 Lab writing conventions, not Google rules.

The Ahrefs study found almost no difference in rewriting by length: 61.46% for descriptions that were too long, 63.69% for the others. Length is not what decides whether it is displayed: relevance to the query matters more.

How do you write a good meta description?

Google’s SEO Starter Guide sums up what is expected. A good description is short, unique to the page and covers the most relevant points. In practice:

  1. Answer the query: say what the page delivers, not what it “presents”. A factual summary convinces better than a vague promise.
  2. Include the keyword and a variant: Google can bold the terms that match the search. One natural occurrence is enough.
  3. Give something concrete: a figure, a format (guide, template, comparison), a lead time, a price. Google recommends bringing together useful information that is scattered across the page.
  4. One description per page: identical descriptions on several pages help neither Google nor the reader tell them apart.
  5. Follow the title: the two are read together. The meta description extends the title, it does not repeat it.
  6. Test truncation: cut at 120 characters and check that the meaning still holds.

Two fictional rewriting examples:

It works in tandem with the title tag. The title names the page, the description says what the reader will find there. Google even uses the title as the first source for the displayed title, according to its documentation on title links.

Should you write a meta description for every page?

Ideally yes; in practice you have to prioritise. On a site with several thousand pages, writing every description by hand is not realistic. Two levers help focus the effort:

  • Write by hand the descriptions of the pages that get the most impressions: home page, service pages, main categories, in-depth articles.
  • Generate the others from a template. Google says programmatic generation is appropriate and encouraged for data-rich sites, provided each description is specific to its page. Example of a template for a product page: name, key attribute, price, delivery time.

A page without a description is not penalised: Google then builds the snippet from the content. Descriptions duplicated across many pages are more of a problem. They often point to a badly configured template or to duplicate content.

To limit or block the snippet, the documentation on the robots meta tag describes three options. nosnippet removes the snippet and max-snippet:[number] sets its maximum length in characters. The data-nosnippet attribute excludes a specific part of the page.

How do you check and fix a site’s meta descriptions?

  1. Take inventory: a crawl with Screaming Frog (Meta Description tab) lists missing, duplicate, too long or too short descriptions.
  2. Prioritise: in Google Search Console, Performance report, spot the pages with high impressions and a low click-through rate for their position.
  3. Compare with the actual snippet: type the main queries for these pages into Google and note the snippet shown. If it never uses your description, it often means the description does not answer the query.
  4. Rewrite and date: record the date of each change so you can compare the click-through rate over the following weeks, at a comparable position.

This summary is one of several page settings. The overview is in on-page SEO and the SEO guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write a good meta description?

Summarise what the page delivers in 140 to 160 characters. Include the main keyword, something concrete (figure, format, lead time) and wording specific to the page. Avoid generic descriptions or ones copied from page to page.

Can you give an example of a meta description?

For a product page: “Nord 3L waterproof jacket, 420 g, taped seams. Delivered in 48 h, free returns within 30 days.” It names the product, gives its key attributes and answers purchase questions. Fictional example.

What is the maximum length of a meta description?

Google sets no maximum: it truncates the snippet according to screen width. The convention used here is 140 to 160 characters, 165 at most, with the key message in the first 120.

What is the difference between meta title and meta description?

The “meta title” refers to the title tag: it provides the clickable title of the result. The description sometimes provides the text shown below it. The title is used in the vast majority of cases, the description much less often.

Is the meta description used in AI Overviews?

Google documents no specific use of this tag in AI Overviews, which rely on page content. How these answers work is explained in AI Overviews.
