Google AI Mode: how it works and what it means for SEO

Google AI Mode (Mode IA in French) is the conversational tab of Google Search, available in France since July 22, 2026. You ask long questions, chain follow-ups, and the system answers by citing web pages. Behind it is a technique described by Google: query fan-out, which splits each question into several searches. This article explains what sets AI Mode apart from AI Overviews and how it builds its answers. It details what to do to be cited in it, how to measure your visibility in Search Console and when to exclude your site.

Key takeaways

Google AI Mode (Mode IA in French) is a Google Search tab where you ask long questions and chain follow-ups, as with an assistant. It breaks each question down into several searches and cites web pages. It has been available in France since July 22, 2026.

  • AI Mode has no eligibility rule of its own: a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet can be cited in it.
  • According to Google, AI Mode searches are three times longer than a classic search.
  • Search Console counts its impressions together with those of AI Overviews, with no clicks or queries.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience built into Google. The user asks a question and gets an answer written by AI, with links to websites. They then chain follow-up questions without starting from scratch.

Google introduced it on March 5, 2025 as a test experience, first open to volunteer users through Search Labs (official announcement). At the time it ran on a custom version of Gemini 2.0. It arrived in France on July 22, 2026, at the same time as AI Overviews, according to the Google France blog.

Definition

AI Mode is a Google Search tab, separate from the classic results. It answers complex questions with a summary generated by Gemini models, cites web pages and accepts follow-up questions.

To find it, Google Search Help lists three ways in: the address google.com/ai, the “AI Mode” button on google.com and the Google app. You can query it by text, by voice, with an image, a PDF, a file or the address of a web page. Google also points out that AI Mode can make mistakes.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Both features rest on the same family of models and on Google’s index. Their use differs. Google’s AI Overviews summarize a topic at the top of a classic results page. AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation.

For a website, the consequence is practical. The impact of AI Overviews shows in the organic clicks of existing pages. The impact of AI Mode shows in the citations earned on longer, more specific questions.

How does Google AI Mode build an answer?

AI Mode uses query fan-out. Google describes it this way: the technology breaks the question down into several subtopics and runs a multitude of searches at the same time. The system then gathers their results to write the answer and choose the pages to cite.

× 3

According to Google, an AI Mode search is three times longer than a traditional search.

Google France, announcement of the AI Mode launch in France, published on July 22, 2026.

Two consequences for a page:

  • The query typed is no longer the only target. A page can be cited for a sub-question the user never phrased. Covering the sub-intents of a topic, in clear sections, counts for more than repeating a keyword. Our guide on search intent details the method.
  • The passage counts as much as the page. The system assembles elements from several sites. A section that makes sense on its own, with its topic, its answer and its source, lends itself better to being reused.

Warning

Google does not publish the detail of the searches run by fan-out. Be wary of tools that promise to “reveal” the exact queries of AI Mode: at best they give an estimate.

How do you get cited in AI Mode?

Google’s documentation is clear: no additional requirements or special optimization are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search.

The guide to optimizing for generative AI (updated on July 10, 2026) stresses the value of the content. It mentions an original point of view, information that is not found everywhere and a structure designed for the reader.

In practice, five habits increase the likelihood of being picked up, without guaranteeing it:

  1. Answer first: the direct answer at the top of the page and at the top of each section.
  2. Use questions as headings: subheadings that echo your customers’ real questions.
  3. Source and date every figure, with a link to the primary source.
  4. Identify the brand: name, author and contact details consistent on the site and elsewhere.
  5. Keep sections complete rather than fragments: Google states there is no need to cut content into small pieces for AI.

The complete method, from rewriting pages to working on the brand, is detailed in our GEO optimization method.

How do you measure your visibility in AI Mode?

The Search Console generative AI performance report has been open to all sites since August 31, 2026. It counts the impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It gives neither clicks, nor queries, nor position.

This data is not enough to know on which questions your brand appears. You need to complement it with a panel of questions tracked on fixed dates and with the traffic coming from assistants in your analytics. Our method to measure AI visibility describes this setup.

Should you exclude your site from AI Mode?

Since August 31, 2026, the Search Console generative AI control lets you exclude a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s generative AI features. Google states that this setting does not change ranking in the classic results. Nor does it block model training.

For a brand selling a product or a service, exclusion mainly costs citations: AI Mode will answer anyway, with other sources. It is more open to debate for a publisher whose revenue depends on people reading its pages. In both cases, decide on the basis of measured AI impressions, not a hunch.

Google AI Mode is part of a wider set of answer engines. Our SEO and AI page links it to classic search engine optimization. Our GEO guide gives the complete framework.

Frequently asked questions

How do you turn on AI Mode in Google?

There is nothing to turn on. Open google.com/ai, click “AI Mode” on the Google Search page or use the Google app. A Google account lets you find your conversation history.

Is Google AI Mode free?

Basic access requires no subscription: just open google.com/ai or the AI Mode tab. Google Help does, however, reserve some models, such as Gemini 3 Pro, for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, depending on the country.

Does AI Mode replace classic Google Search?

No. AI Mode is a separate tab. The classic results, with or without an AI Overview, remain the default page of a Google search.

Can my site be cited in AI Mode without being on the first page?

Yes, it is possible. Fan-out runs several related searches: a page can be cited for a sub-question, even if it does not rank at the top for the query typed. It must, however, be indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Can Google AI Mode give false information about my brand?

Yes. Google states that AI Mode can make mistakes. Check regularly what it says about your brand. Fix things at the source: your site, your listings and the third-party sites that talk about you.
