Key takeaways
AI SEO means two things. First, using artificial intelligence to do SEO: keywords, analysis, assisted writing. Second, optimizing for answer engines (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity), also called GEO. Both rest on the same foundation: a crawlable site, useful content, an identifiable brand.
- Google states that no special optimization is required for its AI features (guide updated on July 10, 2026).
- The unit of measurement changes: you track citations and mentions, not just rankings and clicks.
- Google allows AI as a production tool if it adds value; mass production without value counts as spam.
AI SEO: what exactly are we talking about?
The term “AI SEO” covers two practices that search results pages often mix up. Separating them avoids misdirected budgets.
| Meaning | What it covers | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| AI in the service of SEO | Analysis tools, keyword clustering, writing assistance, audit scripts | Does the tool save time without lowering quality? |
| SEO for AI engines (GEO) | Being used or cited in a generated answer: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot | Do my brand and my pages appear in the answers? |
The second meaning goes by several names: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), LLMO. They all refer to the same work. The term GEO comes from a paper by six researchers, published on arXiv in November 2023, then presented at the ACM SIGKDD 2024 conference. Our complete GEO guide details this framework.
Definition
AI search optimization covers the actions that increase the likelihood that a brand is named, or that a page is cited as a source, in an answer produced by a generative AI engine. We speak of likelihood because no engine publishes its selection rules.
What changes for organic search?
Three changes are documented in 2026. They affect measurement and the distribution of clicks, not the technical fundamentals.
Clicks become scarcer on queries with an AI summary
Seer Interactive tracked 53 brands and 5.47 million queries between January 2025 and February 2026. In February 2026, the organic click-through rate reached 2.36% when an AI Overview is displayed, compared with 3.82% without one (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026). How these summaries work is detailed on our page about Google’s AI Overviews.
2.07%
Average organic click-through rate of a brand cited in the AI Overview, on informational queries. It falls to 0.94% when the brand is not cited, and rises to 3.35% without an AI Overview.
Seer Interactive, 53 brands, 2025 average, published on April 24, 2026.
How to read it: being cited limits the loss without making up for it. Seer notes that the 0.94% figure is pulled down by a single account; without it, it is close to 1.61%. In France, these surfaces have been active since the rollout of AI Overviews and AI Mode on July 22, 2026. Any analysis of organic traffic there must compare before and after that date.
Reputation weighs more than links
Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs measured the correlation between several signals and presence in AI Overviews. Web mentions of the brand come first (0.664). They are followed by link anchors (0.527), branded search volume (0.392) and the number of backlinks (0.218) (Ahrefs, May 26, 2025).
This is a correlation, not proof of causation. It is enough to steer priorities towards the brand’s presence outside the site.
Engines do not cite in the same way
Semrush analyzed 126 million prompts between January and April 2026. ChatGPT cites about 15 sources per answer, Gemini about 3. On Gemini, the overlap between brands mentioned and domains cited can drop to 30% (Semrush, June 26, 2026). An AI SEO strategy therefore tracks each engine separately, and distinguishes brand mentions from page citations.
What does not change?
Google says it plainly: SEO best practices remain relevant, because its AI features rely on its ranking and quality systems (Google Search Central, updated on July 10, 2026). The same guide makes three useful points:
- no AI-specific file, markup or special Markdown is needed to appear in Google Search;
- structured data is not required for generative search, and no special schema.org markup exists for it;
- nothing requires breaking content into tiny chunks for an AI to understand it.
The foundation therefore stays the same: crawlable and indexable pages, one page per intent, an identified author, dated sources. The trust signals of the E-E-A-T framework serve ranking and citation alike.
Warning
Be wary of “GEO without SEO” offers. No answer engine has its own index that would ignore the crawlable web. A poorly indexed site will not be cited more often because a special file or markup has been added to it.
How can you use AI for SEO safely?
Google allows generative AI in content production, with a clear limit. Generating many pages with no added value for the user may violate its policy on scaled content abuse (Google Search Central, updated on December 10, 2025). The criterion is the value provided, not the tool used.
| SEO task | What AI brings | Essential human check |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | Grouping by intent, ideas for long-tail queries | Real volumes from a data tool, not from the model |
| SERP analysis | Summary of recurring formats and questions | Reading the pages directly, with the date of collection |
| Writing | Outline, rewording, title variants | Facts, figures, primary sources, real experience |
| Technical audit | Scripts to analyze crawls or logs | Interpretation and prioritization |
| Metadata | Suggested title tags and meta descriptions | Accuracy and uniqueness, page by page |
The main point of vigilance remains accuracy. A language model can invent a figure or a source. Every published data point must link to its primary source, with a date. The detailed method is described in our SEO writing guide.
How do you optimize a site for AI engines?
AI SEO for answer engines is built in four workstreams, in this order. Moving to the next one too early means optimizing pages that the engines cannot read.
- Open access: check that robots.txt and the CDN layer let answer engines’ index crawlers through. Details for each crawler are on our page GPTBot and AI crawlers.
- Make pages citable: a direct answer at the top, sections that make sense on their own, headings phrased as questions, sourced and dated figures.
- Work on the brand outside the site: trade press, customer reviews, comparison sites, communities. Mentions correlate more than links.
- Measure: a fixed panel of prompts, the AI report in Search Console, citations in Bing Webmaster Tools, referral traffic. The method is detailed on our page on how to measure AI visibility.
Published studies give an order of priority, not guarantees. The founding GEO paper measures a visibility gain when statistics and cited sources are added. It measures a loss with keyword stuffing (Aggarwal et al., 2023, cited above). Its setup only counts five sources per query: keep the order of the levers, not the percentages.
ChatGPT combines internal knowledge and web search: its case is covered in our article on ChatGPT SEO.
Where should you start when you manage a marketing budget?
For a decision-maker, the question is not choosing between SEO and AI SEO. It is deciding what share of editorial effort and brand presence targets citation. Three signals justify speeding up:
- a large share of your target queries already shows an AI Overview (to be measured on a dated export);
- your sector is mostly informational, with long questions;
- your brand has a verifiable reality: products, prices, reviews, press.
On the other hand, postpone if the site is being redesigned, poorly indexed or has no conversion tracking. No citation work makes up for a site that engines crawl poorly.
Frequently asked questions
What is SEO for AI called?
It is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), sometimes AEO or LLMO. All three terms refer to the same goal: being used or cited in the answers of generative AI engines. In France, GEO is the most widely used term.
Which AI should you use for SEO?
There is no single tool. General-purpose models help group keywords, structure an outline or write analysis scripts. Volume and ranking data must come from dedicated measurement tools, never from the model itself.
Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?
No. Google states that its AI features rely on its usual ranking systems. AI SEO adds citation and mention goals, and new indicators, on the same technical and editorial foundation.
Does Google penalize content written with AI?
Google does not penalize the tool, it penalizes the lack of value. Producing many generated pages that bring nothing to the user may violate its spam policy. Content that is reviewed, sourced and enriched with real experience remains acceptable.
